Joy Comes with the Morning

A Psalm of David. A song at the dedication of ^(A)the temple.

30 I will ^(B)extol you, O Lord, for you have drawn me up
    and have not let my foes ^(C)rejoice over me.
²O Lord my God, I ^(D)cried to you for help,
    and you have ^(E)healed me.
³O Lord, you have brought up my soul from ^(F)Sheol;
    you restored me to life from among those who ^(G)go down to the pit.^[a]

⁴Sing praises to the Lord, O you ^(H)his saints,
    and ^(I)give thanks to his holy name.^[b]
⁵^(J)For his anger is but for a moment,
    and ^(K)his favor is for a lifetime.^[c]
^(L)Weeping may tarry for the night,
    but ^(M)joy comes with the morning.

⁶As for me, I said in my ^(N)prosperity,
    “I shall never be ^(O)moved.”
⁷By your favor, O Lord,
    you made my ^(P)mountain stand strong;
you ^(Q)hid your face;
    I was ^(R)dismayed.

⁸To you, O Lord, I cry,
    and ^(S)to the Lord I plead for mercy:
⁹“What profit is there in my death,^[d]
    if I go down to the pit?^[e]
Will ^(T)the dust praise you?
    Will it tell of your faithfulness?
¹⁰^(U)Hear, O Lord, and be merciful to me!
    O Lord, be my helper!”

¹¹You have turned for me my mourning into ^(V)dancing;
    you have loosed my sackcloth
    and clothed me with gladness,
¹²that my ^(W)glory may sing your praise and not be silent.
    O Lord my God, I will give thanks to you forever!

¹³Since we have ^(A)the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, ^(B)“I believed, and so I spoke,” we also believe, and so we also speak, ¹⁴knowing that ^(C)he who raised the Lord Jesus ^(D)will raise us also with Jesus and ^(E)bring us with you into his presence. ¹⁵For ^(F)it is all for your sake, so that as ^(G)grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, ^(H)to the glory of God.

¹⁶So we do not lose heart. ^(I)Though our outer self^[a] is wasting away, ^(J)our inner self ^(K)is being renewed day by day. ¹⁷For ^(L)this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, ¹⁸^(M)as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Our Heavenly Dwelling

5 For we know that if ^(N)the tent that is ^(O)our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, ^(P)a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. ²For in this tent ^(Q)we groan, longing to ^(R)put on our heavenly dwelling, ³if indeed by putting it on^[b] we may not be found naked. ⁴For while we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened—not that we would be unclothed, but that we would be further clothed, so that what is mortal ^(S)may be swallowed up by life. ⁵He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, ^(T)who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

⁶So we are always of good courage. We know that ^(U)while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, ⁷for ^(V)we walk by faith, not ^(W)by sight. ⁸Yes, we are of good courage, and we ^(X)would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. ⁹So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to ^(Y)please him. ¹⁰For ^(Z)we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, ^(AA)so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

Paul's Visions and His Thorn

12 I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will go on to visions and ^(A)revelations of the Lord. ²I know a man ^(B)in Christ who fourteen years ago was ^(C)caught up to ^(D)the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, ^(E)God knows. ³And I know that this man was caught up into ^(F)paradise—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, ^(G)God knows— ⁴and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. ⁵On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, ^(H)except of my weaknesses— ⁶though if I should wish to boast, ^(I)I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth; but I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. ⁷So ^(J)to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations,^[a] ^(K)a thorn was given me in the flesh, ^(L)a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. ⁸^(M)Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. ⁹But he said to me, ^(N)“My grace is sufficient for you, for ^(O)my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that ^(P)the power of Christ may rest upon me. ¹⁰^(Q)For the sake of Christ, then, ^(R)I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For ^(S)when I am weak, then I am strong.
